Foundation

Foundation Life Skills Course


Course Length: 12 weeks

Session Duration: 1 hour per session

Group Size: Maximum of 8 learners

Support: 1 x facilitator and 1 x workshop assistant both with experience of working with adults with learning disabilities and sensory impairments.


Course Aims:

This course aims to help learners:

  • Build confidence and independence in everyday living tasks.

  • Learn simple routines that support self-care and household management.

  • Practice skills in a supportive, step-by-step way.

  • Encourage responsibility, teamwork, and pride in achievements.


Week 1 – Personal Hygiene & Morning Routine


Activity:

  • Washing hands.

  • Brushing teeth.

  • Simple grooming.


Focus Skills: Sequencing daily tasks, using hygiene product, recognising importance of cleanliness, independence in self-care.


Week 2 – Making the Bed


Activity:

  • Practice making a single bed.


Focus Skills: Sequencing steps, folding and tucking in sheets, arranging pillows, pride in a tidy bedroom.


Week 3 – Laundry Basics


Activity:

  • Sorting, loading, and unloading washing.


Focus Skills: Sorting by colour, understanding detergent use, simple folding.


Week 4 – Washing Up & Kitchen Tidy


Activity:

  • Washing dishes by hand.

  • Wiping counters.


Focus Skills: Sequencing dishwashing, using sponge/cloth safely, drying and storing dishes, keeping surfaces clean.


Week 5 – Basic Food Preparation


Activity:

  • Making a simple snack (sandwich or fruit salad).


Focus Skills: Washing fruit/veg, safe spreading and cutting, arranging food neatly, cleaning up after food preparation.


Week 6 – Household Cleaning


Activity:

  • Vacuuming and dusting a room.


Focus Skills: Using a vacuum safely, dusting, sequencing cleaning, recognising importance of a clean space.


Week 7 and 8 – Using Money


Activity:

  • Role-play shopping with coins/notes.


Focus Skills: Identifying coins/notes, counting money, paying for items, giving and receiving change.


Week 9 – Simple Meal Preparation


Activity:

  • Preparing toast with topping / heating soup.


Focus Skills: Toaster safety, stirring/heating soup, serving food safely, cleaning up.


Week 10 and 11 – Travel and Road Safety


Activity:

  • Practicing safe road crossing and bus stop routine.


Focus Skills: Safe crossing points, looking and listening, reading bus sign/timetables, staying safe in public.


Week 12 – Celebration & Review


Activity:

  • Learners choose favourite skills to demonstrate.


Focus Skills: Independence review, practicing chosen skills, teamwork, sharing achievements and receiving certificates.


Outcomes: 

By the end of the course, learners will:

  • Develop independence in daily living tasks (bed making, laundry, cleaning, food prep).

  • Understand simple routines for self-care and household tasks.

  • Handle money and food safely with support.

  • Show pride and confidence in managing everyday responsibilities.

  • Celebrate progress with peers in a supportive environment.

Intermediate

Intermediate Life Skills Course


Course Length: 12 weeks

Session Duration: 1 hour per session

Group Size: Maximum of 8 learners

Support: 1 x facilitator and 1 x workshop assistant both with experience of working with adults with learning disabilities and sensory impairments.


Course Aims:

This course aims to help learners:

  • Increase independence in managing everyday routines.

  • Follow written and visual instructions with support.

  • Develop time management, sequencing, and organisation skills.

  • Take greater responsibility for personal and household tasks.

  • Build confidence in community and independent living skills.


Week 1 – Personal Care & Healthy Routines


Activities:  

  • Discuss importance of daily personal care.

  • Build a personalised “Healthy Morning Routine” (pictures or simple words).

  • Practice choosing clean clothes for different situations.


Focus Skills: Independence in self-care, decision making, routine building.


Week 2 – Making the Bed Independently


Activities:

  • Learners practice stripping and remaking a bed.

  • Using duvet covers, fitted sheets, pillowcases.

  • Timed challenge (fun and supportive).


Focus Skills: Motor skills, sequencing, independence, stamina.


Week 3 – Laundry Sorting + Washing Machine Use


Activities:

  • Sort complex items (towels vs clothes, delicates, heavy items).

  • Use washing machine: settings, temperatures, detergent amounts.

  • Discuss symbols and washing labels.


Focus Skills: Problem solving, safety, interpreting information.


Week 4 – Ironing & Clothing Care


Activities: 

  • Safe use of iron (supervised).

  • Ironing pillowcases and simple clothing items.

  • Folding shirts, trousers, towels.


Focus Skills: Safety, fine motor skills, independence with clothing care.


Week 5 – Kitchen Safety & Using Appliances Independently


Activities:

  • Safe use of kettle, toaster, microwave and oven refresher.

  • Identify hazards and solutions.

  • Practice heating simple foods safely.


Focus Skills: Hazard awareness, appliance safety, confidence.


Week 6 – Preparing Simple Meals


Activities:

  • Learners prepare a simple cooked lunch (beans on toast, scrambled eggs, jacket potato, etc.).

  • Use hob or microwave with less prompting.

  • Wash up independently.


Focus Skills: Multi-step tasks, timing, safe cooking, cleaning up.


Week 7 – Cleaning Skills (Multi-Room)


Activities:

  • Vacuuming, wiping, using cleaning products safely.

  • Clean table areas, shared spaces, and personal areas.

  • Sorting recycling and rubbish.


Focus Skills: Responsibility, hygiene, independence, sequencing tasks.


Week 8 – Community Safety & Confidence Outdoors


Activities:

  • Understand road signs, crossings, and traffic light sequences.

  • Role-play crossing roads and asking for help in public.

  • Understanding safe vs unsafe places.


Focus Skills: Community safety, social communication, awareness.


Week 9 – Money Skills & Budgeting


Activities:

  • Counting coins and notes to make simple totals.

  • Identify value-for-money items.

  • Practice budgeting for a simple meal.


Focus Skills: Numeracy, problem-solving, financial independence.


Week 10 – Real-Life Shopping Skills


Activities:

  • Build a shopping list for a small recipe.
